Do You Go Hyper-Rational?

Remember Mr. Spock on StarTrek? 100% rational, 0% feeling. Know anyone like that? How much are you like that?

Our Saboteurs over-use and abuse our greatest strengths, impacting our performance, our relationships and our happiness. Hyper-Rational energy is rewarded in our society, so I see this a lot in my clients (and myself!). Welcome to the human condition…read on.

There's beautiful strength in being analytical--insight, observation, great mental concentration, expertise and exploration. Wow, great stuff!

The dark side of reasoning taken to the extreme is an absence of emotion, black and white thinking, not letting people in, rigidity, frequent frustration and not accessing the incredible wisdom of intuition.

The hammer of the rational mind is great for linear, simple problems—yes/no, a+b=c. Intuition and empathy are like a paint brush and are the answer for more complex problems
and human dynamics.

Your inner Sage uses the strengths of the analytic mind wrapped in a big hug of empathy with curiosity sprinkled on top! Enter vulnerability and wisdom.

The reality is, your emotions are always happening anyway. They are on channel 88 and your rational mind is tuned to channel 99. Others are getting the emotions whether
you are aware of it or not!

If you relate to being hyper-rational, ask yourself frequently, “How am I feeling?” Be still and feel into the sensations in your body. If you’re not sure how you’re feeling, there are great
feelings lists” online (I know, I use them).

Or try tapping into the feeling you get when you're with a child or a beloved pet, and bring 10% of that into your other relationships and watch the magic unfold.
